The Royal Historical Society represents the interests of historical researchers in universities, libraries, archives, museums, heritage and broadcasting, as well as those engaged in public, community and family history research.<\/p>\n

There are four ways to join and be part of the Society: as a <\/span>F<\/span>ellow<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, an\u00a0<\/span>Associate Fellow<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, a\u00a0<\/span>Postgraduate <\/span>Member<\/span><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<\/span>Member<\/span><\/strong><\/a>. Each category caters for hist<\/span>orians and researchers from different backgrounds, career stages and levels of interest in the past.<\/span>\u00a0Before applying to join the RHS, please read more on each of the four categories to find the option that\u2019s most suitable to you.<\/span><\/p>\n

Applications to join may be made via Society\u2019s Applications Portal<\/strong><\/a>, selecting your chosen membership category.<\/span><\/p>\n

We currently have a worldwide membership of over 7,000 historians, of all kinds<\/strong>, engaged in researching, presenting and publishing history. The Society welcomes historians of all kinds<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>both from within Higher Education and\u00a0<\/span>related<\/span>\u00a0sectors<\/span>,<\/span>\u00a0such as<\/span>\u00a0heritage,\u00a0<\/span>museums<\/span>\u00a0and libraries, as well as those interested<\/span>\u00a0in the past,<\/span>\u00a0but not employed in<\/span>\u00a0a<\/span> history-related profession.\u00a0<\/span>Annual subscriptions paid by the membership are essential to sustaining our work and supporting our activities.<\/p>\n

RHS Fellows<\/strong>, Associate Fellows<\/strong>, Postgraduate Members<\/strong> and Members<\/strong> are entitled to a range of benefits which are are listed in our Guide for Members<\/strong><\/a> (latest version: November 2025)<\/strong> <\/span>as well as on the respective pages for our four categories of fellowship and membership.<\/p>\n

Application deadlines for 2026 are as follows: Mondays<\/strong> 27 July 2026<\/strong>, 5 October 2026<\/strong>, 14 December 2026<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Rejoining the Society as a Fellow or Member<\/span><\/h3>\n

If your Fellowship or Membership has lapsed \/ has been cancelled, and you would like to re-join the Society, please contact our Membership department at membership@royalhistsoc.org<\/a> in the first instance. We will be glad to assist you.<\/p>\n
