\nHow to Apply<\/span><\/h4>\nAs part of the application process, you will be asked to provide:<\/span><\/p>\n1.Project Proposal<\/span><\/b><\/p>\nA clear outline of your research activity (up to 500 words), including:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n- The aims of the project<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- The significance of the research<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Why the proposed activity (e.g. archive visit, interviews, etc.) is essential<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Expected outcomes or progress<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
2. Funding Request\u00a0<\/span><\/b><\/p>\nA detailed summary of the costs for which you are applying, showing:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n- A breakdown of\u00a0anticipated\u00a0expenses<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Justification for each cost<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Confirmation that all items fall within the scheme\u2019s eligible cost categories<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

Academic Reference<\/span><\/b><\/p>\nAn academic reference is\u00a0required. Applicants must arrange for a referee to\u00a0submit\u00a0a supporting statement through the application portal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nPlease note:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n- Applications will only be considered complete once the reference has been received.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n

\nEligibility Criteria\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\nTo be eligible for a Postgraduate Research Support Grant, applicants must meet\u00a0<\/span>all<\/span><\/b>\u00a0of\u00a0the following criteria:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n- Membership<\/strong>:<\/strong>\u00a0Applicants must be current\u00a0<\/span>Postgraduate Members of the Royal Historical Society<\/span><\/b>, with the subscription fee for the current membership year fully paid at the time of application.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Applicant Status<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0Applicants must be postgraduate research students studying for a\u00a0<\/span>Master\u2019s\u00a0degree or PhD in History<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- The scheme is not open to<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0Applicants who have completed their doctoral degree.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Research Focus<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0The proposed research must be historical in nature and have a clearly defined chronological remit.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Stage of Research<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0Proposals should\u00a0demonstrate\u00a0sufficient preparation and capacity to carry out the proposed research. The Society normally expects research visits to take place during the\u00a0<\/span>second, third, or fourth year<\/span><\/b>\u00a0(or part-time equivalent) of postgraduate study.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Previous\u00a0Funding<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0Applicants who have previously been awarded a Postgraduate Research Support Grant are not eligible to apply again under this scheme.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Timing of Research<\/span><\/b>:\u00a0Retrospective applications for research that has already been undertaken are not eligible.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Applicants must ensure that all proposed costs fall within the scheme\u2019s eligible expenses and that any necessary ethical approvals, practical\u00a0arrangements\u00a0or access permissions are in place for the proposed research activity. \nAssessment Criteria (What We Look For)\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\nWhen reviewing applications, we consider:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n1.Clarity and Focus\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n- A clear explanation of the project and the purpose of the research activity<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Well-defined research questions and emerging findings where relevant<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
2. Scholarly Significance<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n- Evidence of the historical or disciplinary importance of the project<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- A convincing case for why the proposed activity is essential<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
3. Feasibility and Planning<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n- A realistic and well-prepared research plan<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- A clear and reasonable budget aligned with eligible cost guidance<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
\u00a04. <\/strong>Value<\/strong> of the Funding<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n- How the requested support will directly advance the project<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Expected outputs or benefits (e.g. chapter progress, dissertation development)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
5. Applicant Circumstances<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\nConsideration will be given to financial need and access to other sources of support. Access to\u00a0additional\u00a0funding will not invalidate an application but may be considered when prioritising awards.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
\nEligible Research Support Costs\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\nThe following costs would be eligible under this grant scheme.<\/p>\n
1.Travel<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n- Standard-class transport (train, bus, economy flights if necessary)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Mileage at\u00a0reasonable or institutional rates.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Local transport during the research trip<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
- Travel insurance where\u00a0required\u00a0or recommended for the trip<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n
2. Accommodation & Subsistence<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n\n- Necessary overnight accommodation<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
